The foundation is arguably the strongest part of any structure. It is often called the base of the home. It provides stability while keeping everything steady. A good concrete foundation should last at least 50 years and be able to withstand extreme weather conditions. You might think that you don’t need a large foundation since you aren’t planning on moving the house but keep in mind that there could be future changes to the location of your home. This is especially true if you’re going to build a basement.

If you want to Create a basement below your House you have to pay attention to the given points –
1. Foundation – First You need to know what type of foundation you are going to use. If you have a concrete slab, then you can’t build a basement under it. A good foundation should be concrete footings poured into the ground that is at least 18 inches deep. These footings should extend past the frost line making sure the home remains stable during winter weather. Next, you want to make sure that you have a well-placed drainage system installed. This may include trenches around the perimeter of the property along with drains down the middle of them. Once this has been done, the foundation needs to be built out from the walls of the house. You need to ensure that the structure is level and straight before pouring the footings. If there are existing underground utilities they should be inspected first to avoid potential damage.
2. Framing –
After the foundation has been laid out and the exterior wall has been completed, framing begins. First, studs are attached to the foundation using nails. There should be 16 inch spacing between each stud and the end goal here is to create a solid frame onto which to hang the drywall. After all, framing has been completed, insulation needs to be added. Insulation comes in various forms; however, fiberglass is best because it provides superior heat retention capabilities. Depending on where you live, it could be called R-19 or even better R-25 per square foot.
3. Drywall & Paint –

2. Make sure that the foundation has adequate space for plumbing pipes. This means that the foundation should be at least 12 inches away from any wall studs.
3. A crawlspace is not recommended unless you have a concrete slab. Crawlspaces are usually built between 2-4 feet below ground level. They are used for ventilation purposes.
4. When building a basement, make sure that the walls are at least 6 inches thick.
5. Before pouring a concrete floor, make sure that the area is completely dry.
