Rust is caused by the oxidation of iron that occurs on the surface of metal structures. Rusting may occur when oxygen gets into contact with iron, causing the outer layers to oxidize. This can happen through exposure to air, water vapor, or other forms of atmospheric moisture. Rust has many names, including pitting, staining, scaling, and bluing. Once the iron oxidizes, it forms compounds called oxides that are more resistant to corrosion than the original iron.

1. Oxalic Acid

Oxalic acid, or oxalate, is a substance that prevents oxidation of metals, and therefore is used to remove rust. When mixed with water, it creates a solution that can be sprayed onto your metal object to prevent its surface from oxidizing. This method works well in removing corrosion caused by humidity, but does not work as well on metal surfaces that are already damaged. To use this method, first rinse off the metal piece with clean water until the dirt has been removed. Next add a small amount of oxalic acid into a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the rusted area until it begins to dissolve. Allow the solvent to dry completely before storing the item away.

 2. Citric Acid

Citric acid is another chemical that inhibits the oxidation of metal, and is often used to treat rusty metal objects. Adding citric acid to water produces a mixture called muriatic acid, which dissolves rust from iron and steel. Clean the metal piece thoroughly with soap and warm water, then submerge in the muriatic acid. Let the metal sit in the solution for at least 30 minutes. Rinse the metal piece clean with running water once it has fully dissolved.

 3. Salt/Sodium Bicarbonate Solution

Salt and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) are both effective solutions to remove rust. Sprinkle baking soda on the affected area, let sit for about 5-10 minutes, and scrub with a brush or rag. Repeat as needed until the rust is gone. Follow with a good cleaning using soap and warm water. Mix salt and tap water together in a 1:1 ratio. Dip a rag in the solution and rub the affected area. Leave the rag on for 10-15 seconds, then wipe off any excess solution. You should repeat this process several times until the rust has disappeared.

Rust Remover Oil

You can use this oil if you have rusty pipes at home, especially your kitchen sink. This is not only useful for removing rust but also prevents it from forming in the first place! Just apply some drops into the water line and leave for 30 minutes before flushing your drains. If there are rust stains on your clothes, just rub them off using a damp cloth.
